Week of Action Events in Rhode Island
Students who are part of the Providence Urban Debate at Brown Unversity will collaborate with the Providence School System to sponsor a debate with high school students and teachers on the subject of high stakes testing in the school system. High school students will have an opportunity to conduct in depth research on public policy issues in preparation for a competitive debate with the goal that participating students will uncover their voices as instruments for public action and personal development. Johnson and Wales University presents a new outlook on the higher education world after the events of Sept 11 through a panel discussion entitled "Listening to International Students: Perspectives on the American Education System". The event will be followed by focus group a month later which will further discuss the issues raised and to strategize actions to address specific needs. February 10, 2003. Also at Johnson and Wales: a dialogue about the power of undergraduate students to impact their communities. The college age founders of English for Action will share their experiences creating and institutionalizing their own non-profit organization. March 14, 2003. Contact: Kdrohane@jwu.edu
As a followup to their semester long engagement with their surrounding community, students at Providence College hope to create a permanent artistic display with the hope of engaging college students and the their neighbors in envisioning their desired relationship. The diplay will consist of 1,000 tiles that visually depict this relationship as seen by 1,000 college students and community members. Contact: kravatz@hotmail.com
Rhode Island College will host a series of speakers as part of the course titled Changing the World: Global Perspectives on Social Movements and Social Change. Students will develop the agenda for these speakers. Strategy, funding, hope and optimism, advocacy, the role of women as leaders, and other topics will be discussed. Speakers will also be sponsored to present during the schools free period, and will be open to the community. January through April 2003. Contact: Senos@ric.edu
Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) will host a presentation and reception for RISD students, faculty, and staff to view student work created through a new community service-learning course called Catalyst Arts: Pawtucket Main Street Studios. The course is devoted to developing arts projects in downtown Pawtucket through collaborations between RISD students and students from Tolman High School. Contact: jcoogan@risd.edu
Alumni of RISD will talk bout their work in community-based arts and education programs at the college as part of a community service enlightenment event. RISD president Roger Mandle will participate. February 13th.
University of Rhode Island:
A series of learning circles to discuss the intersections between sustainability, philosophy, and personal decision-making. While presenting the complexities of global sustainability, organizers would like to encourage reflection about sustainability among members of the URI community. Books will be available on loan to interested individuals.
Teatro Latino will present The Salsa Club, a bilingual play that deals with the difficulties of maintaining ones culture. College students and community members will participate. A Sunday in March 2003. Contact: teatrol@etal.uri.edu
