First Annual VOICE Luncheon at the Capitol
Monday, February 17, 2003, 11:30-1:00 p.m. / Fourth Floor Rotunda
To kick off A Week of Action, students from around the state will come together with state legislators and college presidents in order to present a public issue statement concerning their committment to civic engagement. A declaration will also be made declaring it National Civic Engagement Week- A Week of Action in Oklahoma. (Click here to read the declaration.) Monday, February 17, 1 to 3 p.m. University of Oklahoma and Norman High School and Norman High School North. Topic: "Racial and Ethnic Tensions" or "Governing America"

Wednesday, February 19, 1 to 3 p.m. Western Oklahoma State College and Altus High School. Topic: "The Troubled American Family"

Thursday, February 20, 1 to 3 p.m Tulsa Community College and Tulsa's Thomas Edison Preparatory High School. Topic:  "The Troubled American Family" or "Governing America". TCC NE Campus.

• A Week of Action posters
will be placed across campus and in the three area high schools a week in advance.
Monday - 8:00-10:00 Civic Engagement Booth, Student Union - political brochures and refreshments available
Tuesday 10:00-1:00 Student Union - local democratic, republican, and independent candidates will hold a voter registration drive on-campus.
Thursday 6:00 Student Activities Building - Dinner.
Thursday 7:00 Guest speaker: Dr. Jared Diamond, Professor of Physiology at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Diamond is an insightful master of the impact human beings and their environments have had on each other across time and on both a micro and a macro scale. He will be discussing his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Guns, Germs, and Steel. Join us for a dialogue to discuss his lecture afterwards.

East Central University: 
Thursday - Discussion Panel: "Liberty and Justice for All? Minority Relation in America Today." This panel, in obervance of Black History Month and Raise Your Voice - A Week of Action, will be comprised of different students and facutly that make up the diverse social, ethnic and gender backgrounds on our campus. The objective of the panel is to address, discuss, and create possible solutions to the many issues that threaten the rights of minorities in America today. Oklahoma City Community College (Contact: Staci Owen, OwenSlowen@aol.com):

Monday & Tuesday - Civic Engagement Campaign Booth - will hand out literature, advertise upcoming dialogue and service project and have student sign a banner saying how they are currently engaged.
Wednesday - Day of Service - all student organizations will be invited to participate in a service project in surrounding community.

Oklahoma State University (Contact: Summer Stowe, summertime_82@hotmail.com):

• Video Conference Dialogue
- OSU students will connect with students at Stanford University and Providence College via video conferencing to discuss a topic such as "What is America's role in the fight against terrorism?" or "What is the role of higher education?" 
"What's a Community" panel discussion - one OSU student, one Stillwater High School student, a city commissioner, and a local state representative will sit on a panel to discuss what community means to them. 100 OSU students and 100 high school students will attend the event.
Veteran's Voice - 20 local veterans will visit the President's Leadership Class consisting of 200 freshmen students to give their account of what patriotism and heroism means to them.
Raise Your Voice booth - will provide promotional information about the campaign and events on campus that week.


Oklahoma State University - OKC (Contact: Ashley Freeman, osuchic007@aol.com):

• High school voter registration drive
- students will host drives during lunch periods at five local high schools.
Campus beautification project - students will clean up and beautify surrounding inner city schools with donated trees and flowers.
City Rescue Mission - students will collect needed items throughout the week to be donated to the Mission (i.e. toothbrushes, twin sheets, pillowcases, mattress pads, pillows, towels, dry goods, etc.)
Multicultural Awareness Day - the OSU/OKC Native American Association and the Multicultural Student Association will host a cultural recipe contest. Students, faculty and staff will be invited to sample recipes and vote on their favorite.

What Matters to Me and Why: Dialogue - Discussion on what students wrote about on the topics that were on the Student Union tables at lunch)

The Big Event - students will volunteer their time and services to work with community leaders and businesses to clean up and give back to the community as a way to say "thank you Weatherford."
Random Acts of Kindness Week
Masquerade Benefit Ball - proceeds will be donated to a community fundraising project to build new parks in Weatherford.

• Campus cleanup

Voter registration drive
Outstanding Volunteer Award - local volunteer service will recognize a student who has achieved outstanding participation in the community.
Donation Contest - student organizations will hold contest to raise the most money for philanthropy.
Benefit Concert - admission will be a canned food item.
Student Leader/Legislator Reception - students and local legislators will interact in a casual setting. The goal is for UCO students to become more interested in how our state government works and for state legislators to gain a greater appreciation for UCO students.

Wed, Feb. 19th: 4:00 PM, Guest Speaker Representative Joe Dorman, He will be speaking on how being involved during college years helped him in his career.
10:00-2:00 "Exhibition of Expression" - students can come sign a banner that will be sent to state legislators expressing our views on the condition of the Higher Ed system.
Thursday, Feb. 20th: 10:00-2:00 "Exhibition of Expression"
1:00-2:00 Student Dialogue- come discuss the Regents new tuition increase proposal w/ fellow UCO students.
