Daemen College:

The Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement at Daemen College proposes to hold a bi-partisan forum on civic engagement and the role of youth in the political process and their communities. The forum will feature the leaders of the Erie County Democratic and Republican Parties and be moderated by the Executive Director of the Washington, DC-based Forum for Youth Investment. Following the forum, we will hold a concert by noted singer-activist Ani DiFranco or one of her label’s other artists. We anticipate 400 students in the audience, with 100 of them Buffalo high school student-leaders and 300 of them Daemen students. If funded, this project will serve to leverage additional resources from our campus and community.

Wagner College:

This forum would build on relationships developed with NYCID (NY Center for Interpersonal Development) and other community members since 8/02 through Wagner’s Academic & Cultural Enrichment (ACE) program. NYCID has led 7 groups entitled: “The Mosaic Project: Study Circles to promote cultural awareness” throughout S.I. Members of numerous community groups attend with Wagner College students. The forum on 2/19/03 would draw on the NYCID work as well as other ties between Wagner and the communities to bring diverse communities of SI and their leaders together with political, economic, and educational leaders and our students. The forum would start with a study circle to promote interaction and follow with a discussion on ways to use civic action and engage people not usually involved in community work to improve our community.
