Organized Action by Students Invested in Society (OASIS) at Northwestern University will be hosting an Outreach Day. Students will volunteer to participate in a day of service. A speaker will motivate students in the morning before they begin their work by focusing their attention on the larger issues involved and to challenge them to reflect upon their roles as volunteers and students. Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement (JACCE) at Rockford College (Contact: Belinda_wholeben@rockford.edu or Stephanie_Sharpe@rockford.edu):

• Visit to Jane Addams Hull House museum to learn about the college’s roots in civic engagement.
Voter registration drive.
Speaker Sue Kanthak, Rockford Public School Homeless Children’s Advocate. Will address the role of the teacher in preserving the dignity of the homeless student. Followed by a dialogue. The speaker will also assist students in the coordination of a service project to help provide underprivileged students with school supplies.
Speaker from Court Appointed Special Advocate who advocates for children in the court system. Incorporated into this program will be a student led dialogue.


Southern Illinois State University, Edwardsville, has the following activities planned (Contact: lorwig@siue.edu or skutter@siue.edu):

Organization Fair. Student organizations will set up booths to promote their philanthropies. Tuesday, February 18.
• Tables in the cafeteria will be covered with paper and have provocative questions about civic engagement written on them. The entire campus community will be able to write their responses on them with the markers provided. Wednesday, February 19.
Debate about issues gathered from tabletop writings on civic engagement. Thursday, February 20.


St. Xavier, Chicago - The goals of the program are to bring information to campus regarding civic engagement. Schedule of events:

All week an information booth in the University Dining room for students to obtain facts regarding voting and student involvement.
Monday, a night of open dialogue allowing facuty and student to speak candidly about that politics and community service interrelate. Staff will lead discussion.
Tuesday a fun and interactive activity, a Scavenger Hunt surrounding the issues of civic engagement.
Wednesday, Chicago Mayor Daley will be invited to speak about service, politics and the importance of involvement. There will be an open dialogue to follow.
Thursday, Movie night showing Black Sheep to bring student together to have fun and conversation around the movie's statement.
Friday, a Civic Engagement based Trivia contest.
Saturday, sponsoring a Service Day in conjunction iwht the Alderman Virginia Rugai's office.


University of Illinois - Springfield, will “create free space for students to talk honestly about important public issues and to learn from each other’s experiences,” by sponsoring events during National Student Civic Engagement Week. Meet the Springfield Mayoral candidates. Dialogue with candidates for mayor. Open to all students as well as the public at large. Monday 2/17 6-8pm, PAC C/D
• Inviting guest speaker, Chad Pregracke, founder of the Living Lands and Waters, to speak on activism and personal commitment. (Chad singled handedly started cleaning up the Mississippi in Eastern Illinois and his efforts have developed into a registered 501c3.) Event open to public & surrounding schools & universities. Tuesday2/18 7:00pm, Brookens
The National Association of Social Workers 6th annual lobby/education day: Educational workshop and panel discussion. 9:00 a.m. Renaissance Hotel. Afternoon visits to legislators in the state capital, to emphasize the importance of maintaining funding for human services and higher education. Coordinator: Sandra Mills, chair of the social work program, 217-206-7602, There is a charge of $15 for the event. Wednesday 2/19
Dialogue: Higher Education and the Illinois Budget: All students are invited to participate in a dialogue with legislators and policy makers. Event at the Stratton Building. (Call Karin at 217-206-7716 for more information or to arrange transportation.) Thursday, 2/20 9-10:30am.
UIS Day of Service: Students have the opportunity to serve with local community organizations. (Call 217-206-7716 to participate) Friday, 2/21.
Film showing: “Bloody Sunday,” about the beginning of war in Ireland (Student Life Film series.) Friday2/21 7pm, Brookens.


University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign:

• Service Roundtable
sponsored by FUSION that focuses on Leadership, Diversity and Service. This roundtable will bring students interested in service together to share resources and collaborate on future projects.
Random Acts of Kindness Day will involve distribution of items, such as stickers with smiles or encouragement, candy, snacks and fliers to promote kindheartedness throughout the day.
• Civic Engagement student dialogue with the theme “Can your vote impact social problems?”. Representatives from various student organizations will be invited to come and discuss this important topic.
Winterfest activity comprised of student volunteers reaching out to youth living in Champaign-Urbana. This fun afternoon will have some activities including reading stories, making arts and crafts, drinking hot chocolate, eating cookies and playing games all with a winter theme.
