Johns Hopkins 2003 Death Penalty Awareness Week

February 16-22

Purpose: To educate students about death penalty issues and to increase student involvement in the capital punishment reform movement.

Where: All events held at Johns Hopkins University with the exception of the student convention on Feb. 22 which is to be held at Howard Law School in Washington, D.C.

Important Dates:

Monday February 17th: Death Penalty Awareness Week Kick-off
• Student speeches explaining the purpose of the week
• Informational fliers and pamphlets distributed throughout campus
• Mock execution performed by Johns Hopkins physicians highlighting various flaws in the capital punishment system

Tuesday February 18th: Dean Man Walking introduced by Robert Prosky
• Speech by actor Robert Prosky (defense attorney in Dead Man Walking) explaining the events and story behind the movie
• Showing of Dead Man Walking starring Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, and Robert Prosky.

Thursday February 20th: Live From Death Row
• Students participate in call-in to a Maryland Death Row inmate
• Stories from innocent death row survivors
• Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer period with current and exonerated death row inmates

Saturday February 22nd: Student Death Penalty Convention
• Opportunity for Students from the Maryland/D.C./ Virginia area to learn about current death penalty issues and strategize the next steps for collective student involvement.
• Speeches, panel discussions, and workshops led by death penalty experts, exonerated death row inmates, elected officials, and student death penalty activists.
• Participating organizations: Death Penalty Information Center, National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Innocence Project, American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, Quixote Center Equal Justice Project, Maryland Coalition against State Executions, Campaign to End the Death Penalty, Public Resource Center for Activism & Arts
