Multiculturalism: "Civil Rights - Past, Present, Future" - A roundtable discussion about the legacies of women and their part in the civil rights movement. The roundtable will consist of four professors including: Dr. Toni Humber, Dr. Gomez, Anita Jain, and Charlene Teters. Community Involvement: "Love The Community Your In" - A second annual volunteer fair will allow student to actively participate in local community partners as a venue to the outside community. Freedom is Expression: "Campus Café Night" - A place where students can listen to peer's voices while educating themselves about a plethora of topics. The night will consist of open mic sessions, set acoustic performances, ice-breakers, a presentation from groups about issues, a presentation of different forms of engagement (art, music, film), and lastly a closing speaker. Debate session: "Campus Debates - Double Standards" - A discussion about issues that are important to the Cal Poly Pomona campus. The debate will allow students to become engaged through educating themselves about both sides of an issue. There will be two viewpoints presented from each side of a topic. CSU-Fresno
February 22 & 23 - As part of a campus-wide effort to engage the university community in addressing the abysmal literacy rates in Fresno County, two orientation, information and training sessions will be held for the ReadFresno Project. The ReadFresno initiative will target 1st - 3rd graders who read below grade level and who attend one of the 50 lowest performing elementary schools in Fresno County. Volunteer tutors/readers will be matched with a young child who they will work with for one hour, one day per week, typically in an after-school program setting.
February 23 - Award winning philanthropist, author and speaker, Greg Forbes Siegman will be speaking on-campus. He will address many of the issues covered in his recent book, "The First Thirty", including leadership and service to the community.
March 10 - Creating a Seamless "Convergence" of Teaching, Research and Community Service. This workshop is intended for faculty, but will promote the goal of engaging more students in the community through service-learning, community based research and service with faculty members. With faculty members as the primary driving force on many campuses, it is essential that we gain faculty member's buy-in and involvement in order to engage the largest number of students possible.
Notre Dame de Namur University
Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) is hosting an all-day gathering on "Building Engaged and Healthy Communities" for students throughout the bay area. It will be at NDNU on Friday, March 10, from 9:00 to 4:00. Jim Diers, author of Neighbor Power and Barbara Holland, director of the National Service Learning Clearinghouse, will be our main speakers.
