Voter Registration
Throughout the semester SCAD will be running a voter registration drive to inform and encourage students, faculty and staff to vote. We will be hosting “Around the Campus in 9 Days”. In 9 days we will visit each dorm, set up a table in Hauke and register as many people as possible.

Burlington’s Mayor on Campus!
Monday, Feb. 16, 6:30 PM Alumni Auditorium
Peter Clavelle, the Mayor of Burlington and a Vermont Gubernatorial candidate, will be coming to the Alumni Auditorium to speak to students on the importance of voting, how and why to contact our elected officials, how to become politically involved through activism or running for office, and what civic engagement is. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

This is an opportunity for you to talk with the Provost Dr. Russ Willis, Community Service Director Nancy Cathcart and Vermont Campus Compact’s Kate VanCantfort. We will discuss the role Champlain College should take in the community and actions students can take to fulfill this role. This discussion will center around the mission statement in the 2003-2004 admissions catalogue in relation to our social responsibility as an institution and neighbor in Burlington, VT.

Film Series
(Tentatively scheduled for March 22nd and April 19th)
Popcorn and Water!
SCAD will host a film series later this semester exploring the politics of Hollywood and mainstream documentary films. We will examine the political agenda of the film and connect it to current political events.

Wednesday, March 10th
11:00 AM
Sha’an Mouliert, will be giving a lecture on Building Caring Communities. Mouliert is on the leadership team of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom’s national campaign, Uniting for Racial Justice.
1:30 PM John Turner will be speaking on the Cost of War. Turner is a former history professor from Norwich, a published author and radio commentator for the Point radio station.
4:00 PM Jim and Alice Wuertele will be giving a lecture on Economic Globalization. Questions such as; What is it? Who is involved? Is it working? Are important for all of us to consider as the world gets smaller and wiser.
7:00 PM Derrick Ashong, actor, musician, and writer will give a speech on student civic engagement at 7:00PM. Ashong, is a 25 year old Harvard student born in Ghana, West Africa. He is a PhD student in Afro-American studies and Ethnomusicology, where he studies the influence of music on the development of political identities. Derrick Ashong is the founding member of the Fannie Lou Hammer Project, a non profit organization that addresses civil rights.

Thursday, March 11th:

Bruce Gagnon, will present. Gagnon is the coordinator of the Network against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space, he has led campaigns around civil liberties and the opposition of the Patriot Act.
1:30 PM Jim Horgue will be speaking as a representative from the Vermonters for Voting Integrity. This group was founded in the summer of 2003 with the purpose of insuring the integrity of the vote in VT. They serve as a source for ways and means to prosecute election fraud, and to set an example for the rest of the nation.

Friday, March 12th :
11:00 PM
Students for Global Change will be showing their documentary, Civic Engagement 2004. Student filmed and produced production, show the current state of civic engagement, and focus on the participation of students.
1:00 PM Gary Cheney will show a video and workshop as a representative of Alternatives to Recruitment by the Military. Cheney is a Vietnam veteran and will be talking about selective service registration and training people in how to speak with peers about joining the military.
3:00 PM there will be a gubernatorial Forum for candidates for governor in 2004. Hardy Macia from the Libertarian party, Peter Clavelle from the Democratic party will be addressing interested students and community. Governor Douglas was invited, but has not confirmed his attendance.

Saturday, March 13th the engagement activities will come to a close with a day of Music for Change. This event begins at 12:00pm in the LSC Student Center. The event will be featuring musicians Roland Parkins, Sarah Mell, Jess Huffman, Ryan Millet, and Jesse Haven. The event will end at 8:00pm.
