Johnson & Wales University
President John J. Bowen's office will sponsor two panels on student Community Leadership. Dr. John Bowen, President of the Providence campus, will introduce the panelists and talk about the priority Johnson & Wales places on community leadership and the central place of student civic development in a Johnson & Wales education. The panel discussions will be moderated by Susan Connery, Director of the Feinstein Center, and will provide participants with useful knowledge and insight on strategies for overcoming challenges to civic action with impact, improve students' understanding of their own unique resources, and provide effective models for student-community collaboration.
The University of Rhode Island
"Boxes and Walls: The Oppression Experiment" program, will provide an interactive, provocative, and educational tour in which students and individuals momentarily experience what it is like to be a member of a different group of people. President Carothers will speak on the opening night of this event about social awareness and understanding on a diverse college campus.
Brown University
Brown University will host a viewing of The New Student Politics Teleconference on February 19 at 2 pm at the Joukowsky Forum on 111 Thayer St. in Room 155
Roger Williams University
A student essay competition on college student involvement in local government will kick off "College Students and Civic Engagement: Finding and Raising Your Voice." Winners of the essay contest will be invited to join Mayor Cicillene of Providence and other members of the RWU community for a special luncheon. This will be followed by a civic engagement forum led by the Mayor in which will speak to students about his personal experiences in local and state government. President Nirschel will be a member of the essay selection committee and will actively participate in the forum.
