Statewide Month of Action Kick-Off

Thursday, February 12, 2004, State Capitol:
• 2:00 Reception for Students and Administrators- 4th Floor Rotunda
• 3:00 Forum with Students and Legislators- House Chambers

Rose State College

Michigan State University Teleconference- Thursday, Feb. 19 in the Student Center. We will be connecting to the teleconference "The New Student Politics." All students will be invited.

Dialogue: "The Condition of Higher Education"- Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center. All students will be invited.

Voter Drive- Monday and Tuesday, March 1-2. Clubs will compete for Club of the Year points with the number of voters each register.

2nd Voter Drive- A voter drive will also be conducted at the Diamond Leadership Series lecture on Friday, March 5.

Senate Luncheon with District Representatives- Tuesday, March 9 at 2 p.m. The Student Senate, along with special faculty guests will attend a luncheon with this district's representatives in the state house and senate. The topic will be "Student Issue Priorities," and legislators will address students about what issues they should be aware of as students.

Northeastern State University

Voter Registration Drive- January 19-21, located at NSU, Tahlequah High School, and Tahlequah Sequoyah High School. We are having it early so students will be able to vote during the primary election on February 24th.

Civic Engagement Booth- February 16th-18th, University Center.

NSU Luncheon- February 18th, Official NSU Month of Action Kick-Off.

Michigan State University Teleconference- Thursday, Feb. 19th. Our campus plans to be a part of the Midwest Collaboration teleconference "The New Student Politics."

Can Food Drive- February 23-27. The NSU Collegiate VOICE Committee will coordinate this event throughout the week on our campus as well as in the community. Donations will also be collected at the basketball game being held Thursday night of that week.

Campus Clean-Up- March 1st. Students, faculty, and staff will be encouraged to be a part of this activity.

Political and Community Service Forum- March 4th.

Langston University

Raise Your Voice- February 18th at 5:00 p.m. LU CVC will play music in foyer and pass out a flyer that will detail the events to be held during Month of Action.

Organizational Fair- February 19th, 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. Various organizations will be invited to set up tables at which students may sign up to join the organizations or receive more information. The air will be open to the entire student body, and organizations will be encouraged to seek members.

LU’s Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow- February 19th at 6:00 p.m. This will be a “Speak Out” session in which students will be dialoguing with faculty and staff about changes that have occurred here at Langston, as well as the upcoming changes.

Understanding Politics and Your Civic Duty- February 20th at 5:00 p.m. Students will be invited to a dinner at which a speaker will discuss citizens’ duties, how to make informed voting decisions, along with emphasizing the importance of their participation in civic engagement.

Turning Point- February 20th. This is an intense, two-day seminar series for leaders as well as individuals desiring a leadership role. It is a provocative and interactive workshop that helps individuals who have bee unable to achieve their full potential due to roadblocks and pain from the past. Various topics pertaining to 21st century leadership will be covered.

Raise Your Voice Halftime- February 23rd. Candidates for local and presidential elections will be invited to speak during halftime of both the men’s and women’s basketball games. The LU Marching Pride band will also be invited to provide an entertaining atmosphere. We also will conduct a “Take a Chance” give away at which students will win gifts from a local store.

Oklahoma City Community College
OBU Blood Drive- February 18th & 19th.

Michigan State University Teleconference- Thursday, Feb. 19th. We will serve as a host site for the national teleconference on The New Student Politics, offered through Michigan State University.

African-American Heritage Lecture with Al Bostick- February 24th. Currently serving as an artist-in-residence with the Oklahoma Arts Council, Mr. Bostick will bring to life the culture of African rhythms and the connections to the current African-American heritage.

GEAR-UP Community Service Project- TBA. The OCCC sponsored GEAR-UP program, designed to encourage OKC area youth to attend college, and members of the College’s student Leadership Council will spend a day mentoring, learning and exchanging information about the college experience.
Political Engagement Information Booth- March 4th, College Union. Information will include promotional buttons, local and national political candidate information, a political affiliation quiz, and voter registration materials.

Food Bank Community Service Project- March 5th. Students will be invited to go to the OKC area food bank to sort food, clothing and other donated items.

Higher Education Day at the Capitol- March 9th. Members of the Leadership Council and other interested students, faculty, and staff will be invited to attend Higher Ed Day at the state capitol.

Bioterrorism Lecture with Dr. David Magnus- March 9th. Dr. Magnus, a leading scholar in the field of bioethics, will share his thoughts on research and ethics related to the current threat of bioterrorism.

Cameron University
Whose Responsibility is It?- February 16th-20th. Posters depicting photographs of poignant social, environmental, or political situations will be hung in prominent campus locations with large sheets of blank papers and pens. Students will have the opportunity to write out their answer to the question "whose responsibility is it?"

Canned Food Drive- February 23-27. Boxes will be placed around campus. On February 30th, boxes will be delivered to the local food bank.

Drug & Alcohol Awareness Day- March 11th. 2:00 p.m. Sponsored by VOICE, CCM, and the Student Development Office. Students will get to use drunk goggles to experience what it is like to be drunk. There will be pizza for lunch, guest speakers, and recovering addicts will discuss their experiences with substance abuse. The purpose it to make students aware of the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

Campus Dialogue- TBA. VOICE will be hosting a dinner, dialogue and video entitled, "The Bad Samaritan." A discussion on civic responsibility will take place after the video is shown.

Oklahoma State University

Big Poster Event- February 18th- March 12th. This is an opportunity for students to share their views on terms that correspond with civic engagement. “Big Posters” will be set up at various locations and campus that have different words that will stimulate interest and discussion. There will be markers and room on the poster for students to write opinions on how they view the different topics.

8th Grade Career Fair- February 18th. The OSU Volunteer Center is sponsoring a career fair for 8th grade students. Volunteers from OSU’s VOICE Committee, as well as other volunteers will provide pamphlets and information on how to be civically engaged.

National Teleconference on Student Civic Engagement- February 19th, 1:00- 2:00 p.m. OSU will hold a viewing of the Midwest Collaboration National Teleconference on The New Student Politics.

Raise Your Voice Presentation with Mayor Bud Lacey- Wednesday, February 25th. Mayor Lacey will have an open-mike forum with OSU students in which issues may be addressed and discussed.

Veteran’s Voice- Wednesday, March 3rd. 20 local veterans will speak to the President’s Leadership Class to give an account of what patriotism and heroism means to them. Each veteran will be assigned to a group of ten students. The objective of this event is to provide students with an opportunity to think critically about their role as citizens and have personal contact with a Stillwater resident.

What Party are You? Wednesday, March 3rd. More details to come…

Civic Engagement Fair- Wednesday, March 10th. Campus organizations will set up booths and provide information to students about how to become civically engaged through these different organizations. Different organizations involved include: Young Democrats, College Republicans, Students in Free Enterprise, OSU Volunteer Center, Into the Streets, The Big Event, and other civically engaged organizations.

Toiletries Drive for Troops in Iraq- Begins February 15th and is ongoing throughout the Month.

February 26th, 10:00 a.m., Meeker High School

Civic Engagement Fair- February 24th, 9:00 a.m. Fair will include information on upcoming local and national elections and events that will take place in Pottawatomie County and in the city of Shawnee, such as Chamber o Commerce meetings concerning the community development and economic planning.

Campus Dialogue/Guest Speaker- February 26th, March 4th, March 11th, all at 7:00 p.m.

University of Central Oklahoma

Campus Mapping Project- February 15th - March 20th. Through a series of meetings, volunteers will use the Raise Your Voice Community Mapping Guide to conduct and investigation of the UCO campus. Volunteers will meet every Friday at 3:00 during Month of Action.

Community Civic Engagement Fair- Thursday, March 11th, Bronco Lake. Community organizations, campaigns or projects, and campus organizations will be invited to an on-campus fair in an effort to inform students on opportunities to engage in the community.

Weekly Booth- Every Friday during Month of Action, from 11:00- 1:00 a booth will be set up in the University Center that will include VOICE information, voter registration information, and promotion of events. There will be a drawing of those registered to vote at the end of the month for a $50 gift certificate.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University

Month of Action Kick-Off- February 15th- 20th. An information booth will be set up in the Student Union during high traffic hours. Materials will include information about the Raise Your Voice campaign on a national, state, and campus level. Agendas for the month will be available. The table will be covered with butcher paper where students can write their opinions about where their generation stands on political and public service levels.

Dinner Dialogue- TBA. Administration, faculty, students, Weatherford mayor, and community leaders will be invited to hear speakers from the Leadership Weatherford initiative, Focus on the Future. A possible outcome of this dialogue is starting a Leadership SWOSU or integrating SWOSU students with the Leadership Weatherford initiative.

The Big Event- TBA. Students are invited to volunteer their time and services to work with community leaders and businesses to clean up and give back tot the community.

Food Drive Competition- March 8th- 12th. Throughout the week residence halls will be competing in a food drive competition. The winning residence hall will be rewarded with a plaque and a breakfast party.
