Day at the State House
Date: February 12, 2004
Time: 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
The Michigan Campus Compact Student Leadership Team will hold its first Day at the State House. This free event is intended to attract students from across the state who are interested in "Raising their Voices" on higher education at the Capitol. Students who are involved on their campuses in community service, social justice work, and/or political activism are encouraged to attend. As part of the Raise Your Voice Campaign, students are working to change the tide of apathy and disinterest in public issues and government.

This event will enable participants to:
• Attend House and Senate Sessions
• Discuss key higher education issues with legislators
• Become educated on the lobbying and legislation process
• Pose questions to a panel of higher education lobbyists
• Advocate on behalf of students in higher education

Campus Events

Central Michigan University
Dates: February 15-March 16, 2004
Central Michigan University Volunteer Center students will be putting on “Youth and Voting” during the Month of Action. During the month, a series of signs dealing with facts about voting and different issues will be placed around campus. Flyers and banners will be placed strategically around the campus with random facts about voting, relevant issues and ways to get involved. The flyers and banners will give important facts but will be ambiguous enough to make students wonder what is going on. The passive programs will lead up to a keynote speaker, Senator Andrew “Buzz” Thomas, the youngest Michigan Senator at the age of 34. The activities will encourage students to start thinking about the upcoming election as well as give them resources to find out about candidates and where they stand on the issues. Hopefully they will also be inspired by a young person in politics. For learn more or to become involved with “Youth and Voting”, please contact Marlena Taylor or Danielle Tate at taylo1me@cmich.edu or tate_danielle@hotmail.com.
