Peace Week was conceived in the fall of 2002 as an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and the greater Decorah community to actively explore within their lives and meanings of peace and the origins of violence in all levels of society. The activities and events of Peace Week seek to create an environment in which the spheres of peace and violence can be discussed in depth with the help and facilitation of experienced and influential individuals. The activities and events of Peace Week will serve as a catalyst for positive change through its affective dialogue, education, and inspiration for all people to advocate and actively derail the cycles of hatred and violence.

Event - AWOL Program (Alternative Week of Offsite Learning)
The mission of the Buena Vista AWOL Program is to immerse students in different cultures, heighten social awareness, and to advocate life-long social action through service on a local, regional, national and international level. The program promotes an opportunity for participants to make discoveries, make connections, and make change. Over spring break there are five different locations in the United States. Each trip has a different focus or social issue; "Random Acts of Kindness" in Oklahoma City, "Hunger & Homelessness" in Seattle, "Giving Back" in California, "Animals" in Utah and "Peace and Justice - Civil Rights" in Alabama. The students and advisors will engage in service learning projects focused on civic engagement to influence and learn from that community.
