UTAH Campaign Activities

2004-2005:

Fall Kick-off Bus Tour
In the fall of 2004 student leaders from every campus in the state of Utah boarded a bus and traveled the whole state visiting and participating in rallies on every campus. The purpose was to kickoff the 2004-2005 Raise Your Voice campaign which is centered on student involvement in local and national politics by increasing voter registration and getting out the vote, with the overall goal of increasing civic engagement. The student leaders invited their campuses to “step it up” as engaged citizens and students. As part of this tour, local candidates who were up for election were invited to participate in rallies that occurred statewide on every campus. Campus presidents, administration, faculty and other students were also involved in these rallies. The bus tour went from south to north, stopping on every campus involving thousands of students, staff, administration, and community members

Dialogue on Democracy
In September the Coalition for Civic and Service Learning was formed. The coalition was created as members of the community involved in influencing education and community came together to sponsor Utah's first Dialogue on Democracy. Legislators, campus presidents, students, faculty, community members, and community organizations gathered to support and sign a resolution calling for a renewed vision around the civic mission of education and the role of our citizens in a democracy. In conjunction with the signing, speakers, dialogues and panel discussions were held on two different occasions involving individuals across the state. Commitment and continued collaborative work is moving forward this K-16 effort of civic and service learning.
