Raise Your Voice in your state
MICHIGAN Campaign Activities
Illinois Campus Compact, in partnership with the Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri Campus Compacts, has received a subgrant from national Campus Compact to conduct statewide and regional programs and events in conjunction with this campaign.
2004-2005:
The Raise Your Voice Campaign continues in Michigan for 2004-2005. The Student Community Action Network (SCAN) is working to recruit students to attend the second Day at the State Capitol. SCAN has been busy planning the event, a way to convene students who are passionate about social issues and want to learn how to take legislative action. With the assistance of the Honorable Deborah Cherry (D-Burton), Michigan Campus Compact will be hosting the Day at the State Capitol on February 22, 2005. Students from across the state will have the opportunity to observe House and Senate sessions, tour the capitol building, raise their voice with legislators over lunch, and learn how to turn their ideas into legislation.
SCAN representatives attend monthly training institutes at the MCC office on topics including dialogue facilitation, privilege, civic engagement through the arts, and more. These students provide leadership for service and civic engagement in Michigan and participate in statewide events related to their work. On February 23, 2005, Michigan will participate in the 2nd Annual National Student Teleconference, Get a Job or Get a Life? (or both
) A National discussion on Higher Education's Civic Mission. Campuses in Michigan will serve as host sites for the event and sponsor local dialogues that will reflect on the Teleconference discussion.
Michigan Campus Compact is once again offering Month of Action grants to fund student civic engagement events from February 20- March 26, 2005. Campuses can use these grants to participate in the Day at the State Capitol and National Teleconference, as well as create their own unique campus and community events. The events should involve student interaction with elected officials - local, state, or national.
Michigan will again bring the Raise Your Voice Campaign to existing state events including Central Michigan University's Issue Day and the Grand Valley State University Leadership Summit.

2003-2004:
Michigan and Ohio students were so excited about the Seize the Day: Student Action for Change Conference on civic engagement that took place in April 2003, the Student Leadership Team will be working to recruit students to attend the Beyond the Borders: Shaping Your Future With Civic Engagement Conference to be held in April 2004 at the University of Findlay in Ohio. The Student Leadership Team has taken the initiative to engage others in the political process by hosting voter registration drives on their campus and across the state. With the assistance of Honorable Doug Hart (R-Rockford), Michigan Campus Compact will be hosting the first Day at the Statehouse on February 12, 2004. Students from across the state will have the opportunity to attend House and Senate committee hearings, tour the capitol building, and raise their voice with their legislators over lunch. On February 19, 2004, Michigan State University (MSU) will host a national teleconference on student civic engagement and The New Student Politics. Host sites at campuses across the nation will be able to plug into the teleconference via satellite or the internet, as well as phone or email in questions for the panelists at MSU.
Based on the success of the 2002-2003 Civic Dialogue Grants, Michigan will offer the grants again to fund student-facilitated dialogues on campuses regarding important civic issues. In 2002-2003, seven college and university Campus Mapping Teams began interviewing student organizations, institution presidents, faculty and staff, and community agencies in order to start mapping the engagement of their campus. With such a great start, the students will continue to develop their action plans, determine the gaps, and make recommendations to faculty members and administrators. Additionally, Michigan will bring the Raise Your Voice Campaign to existing state events such as Grand Valley State Universitys Leadership Summit, The University of Michigans Advocacy Day, Central Michigan Universitys Issue Day and many more.

2002-2003:
Student Leadership Team - Student Leadership Teams are being formed across the country, demonstrating civic engagement, providing input into creating civic leaders and inspiring the Raise Your Voice movement on their campus. During the first year of the grant, Michigans Student Leadership Team coordinated a Student Civic Engagement Conference, co-sponsored by the University of Michigan. These students are involved in conventional politics as well as community service and are exploring the concept of Service Politics - bridging the gap that is often perceived between the two. Discussions take place about creating change in todays society and the responsibilities of young adults in public life.
Campus Mapping Team - Students from around the country are working on civic issues- from serving in middle schools to organizing campuses around eliminating sweatshops - to improve communities and the broader world. As a way to support those efforts and support the broader goal of helping others to take action on the issues that students care most deeply about, this community mapping activity has been created to identify the potential assets and allies that exist on campuses and also help determine the gaps. After this initial mapping, students will be able to develop strategies for action and find additional resources to promote involvement about issues of concern. After using this mapping tool, campuses may utilize the result to providing more civic engagement opportunities.
Community mapping does the same thing, except the purpose is to evaluate college campuses with regard to student voice and civic engagement. It will also help locate assets for getting involved and making democratic change on campus. Mapping can help students get started on implementing desired civic changes. Most importantly, it is a tool that initiates a community building process on campus that helps locate allies and resources so that change is possible.
Campus Based Dialogues - The Raise Your Voice: Student Action for Change Campaign is built upon the premise that an essential component of civic engagement is facilitating dialogues in which young people come together to have their voices heard on issues of critical importance to society. Dialogues create free spaces for students to get together and talk honestly about important public issues and learn from each others experiences. It is the ultimate goal that these dialogues will then lead to action to strengthen communities and rebuild democracy.
The purposes of all dialogues are:
To bring together people from diverse backgrounds and experiences,
To open avenues for discussion, learning and cooperation,
To promote understanding of different points of view,
To identify information or issues,
To offer opportunities for people to become part of an interactive network of active and concerned citizens.
Student Civic Engagement Listserv - The Studentspeak Listserv is a five state collaborative conversational listserv where students from the MWC can share their ideas and opinions on civic involvement or any like topics. Students from the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Michigan) can spark conversation about an issue and generate regional opportunities for change. Questions will be posed that students can respond to, or start their own discussions. Students from across the nation are welcomed to join.
