Advocacy / Protest Parade:

The University of California- San Diego (UCSD) Advocacy/Protest Parade was organized by four students at UCSD who had never participated in a protest before! The Parade was an opportunity for students to come out and advocate or protest any issue that they cared about. What we had found was that many of the students did not have the opportunity to "raise their voices" in such a way. We provided 100 picket signs (made out of foam boards, wooden sticks, and duct tape, all for under $300) and set up ten tables across our Library Walk. At each station there were 10 signs, a couple markers tied and taped to the table so people didn't run off with them, and a small sign explaining the campaign and the purpose of the event. We rented hand held microphones with speakers (the bullhorns were broken) and were able to lead the crowd. Many of the people that showed up were the types of students that some people might mistake as "apathetic" because they were not a member of a club/organization. We were able to show fellow UCSD students that we care about many issues and are addressing them in a variety of ways.
