PART-TIME 8-WEEK SUMMER SOCIAL JUSTICE INSTITUTE and 5-DAY IMMERSIVE NATIONAL STUDENT ORGANIZING TRAINING

The Social Justice Institute -
Spend 10-15 hours/week this summer gaining the skills and knowledge needed for successful social justice work alongside some of the most talented student activists around the country. 15-20 Fellows will be selected from a wide range of fields, including global activism, electoral politics, grassroots organizing, and local direct service. This intensive program lasts for 8 weeks and is designed for select students who are passionate about collaboration, self-improvement, community organizing, and taking action. In addition to rigorous training, this team of Fellows will envision and build the foundation for a new Center for Campus Democracy that will launch in the fall.

The program runs from June through July and begins with an exciting full-time 6-day training with experienced organizers. After the initial training, students will give 10-15 hours/week on top of a job they have secured with a local non-profit or government office. The program is free for participants, though Fellows will be asked to help raise funds for their projects while enrolled in the Institute and participate in the full program.

We are particularly interested in students who are working in a political office, running a summer camp or other service program, doing community organizing work, or engaging in direct action.

Prospective Fellows should contact Stephen Smith at snsmith@post.harvard.edu or 617.233.2624 ASAP, and no later than May 15th and ASAP. There is no particular application, but interested participants must go through an interview.

Also, if you would like to attend the 6-day training but cannot commit for the entire summer, please see below - a select number of spots will be open to outside participants at $200 each - June 10-15. The Institute is a project of Global Justice, the Foundation for Civic Leadership, and the national Raise Your Voice Campaign.

National Student Organizing Training
June 10 - June 15th * Cambridge, Massachusetts

A RIGOROUS 6-DAY COURSE ON SOCIAL JUSTICE WITH EXPERT TRAINERS AND PROVEN CAMPUS LEADERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

Participants, presenters, partners and trainings from Global Justice, the Foundation for Civic Leadership, COOL, OxFam International, United Students Against Sweatshops, National Student Partnerships, National Campus Compact, Massachusetts Campus Compact, Boston Area Students Involved in the Community, the Organizing Leadership and Training Center and the Industrial Areas Foundation will lead you through some major components of movement-building in the United States:

- Campaign Development and Execution
- One-to-one Organizing and Relational Work
- Power Analysis and Team-Building
- Global Issues and Activism
- Action and Evaluation

During this period of intense, action-based learning and workshops, student participants like yourself will be expected to offer their own experiences, stories, best practices, and personal struggles as a necessary building block for the training. We only want students who actively want to challenge themselves, their beliefs, and their skills. And who want to have fun. One of our goals is to share lessons and struggles across movements and issue areas; therefore, the training program will be the same for every participant. It is designed for young people and people who work with young people.

Cost for the training is set at $200 if you register before May 15th, and group rates from students from the same school or organization will be worked out on a case-by-case basis. The cost of the training is set to be less expensive than comparable programs, and revenue will go toward programmatic costs, food costs, scholarships, and seed money for the Institute. If you find the cost of the training prohibitive, please contact us to work something out. Scholarships will be made available in some cases. Programming begins at 7pm on Tuesday, June 10th and will end by 3pm on Sunday, June 15th.

Sessions will run at various locations in Harvard Square. A light breakfast and lunch will be available to participants each day. Participants are responsible for their housing. In cases of need, we will offer free housing (on a floor) with local students and supporters; if you apply for free housing after May 1st, it will not be guaranteed.
