RESOURCE GUIDE FOR STAFF AND FACULTY
WORKING IN SUPPORT OF ENGAGED STUDENTS

GETTING STARTED

MENTORING STUDENTS

It may be most productive to think of the role between yourself and student leaders or organizers of a civic engagement campaign as a collegial relationship. This work calls for greater parity if students are to assume ownership of the work.

Two suggestions:

• Create a set time every week or every other week when you will meet with the student(s) for 15 - 30 minutes. Having a set time frees both parties from calling a meeting and allows for a regular and routine method of checking in without necessarily checking up and

• Create an air of informality and open give and take between two responsible adults. This may require some effort as students frequently are so accustomed to deferring to authority that they need to be given assurances that you would like a greater degree of equity.
